The G and D strings are wound with precision rolled silver flat wire, the warmth of this material’s sound making it ideal for the lower two strings on the violin. The A string is wound with aluminium, a more appropriate choice for that particular string. The E string, like many other violin E strings, is made of solid carbon steel.
